Managing Mobile devices can be a pain on a road trip (and dangerous). I picked up the Creative Options Large Rack System at Hobby Lobby to put together this Organizing Hack to help keep you safe and sane during your next adventure.

My wife used to have all the mobile devices in a box and would often have to riffle through them all while driving. It was difficult and unsafe. I created this organizing hack to help her quickly access the screens the kids wanted and be able to make sure they made their way back to the front seat when their time was up.

We moved to Arizona about two years ago. Kristie often goes on road trips back to California and up to Utah. Sometimes I can join her, but often I can’t. These are great times for her and the kids; with singing songs and listening to audio books. The kids also like to save up their “screen time” they earn at home to use while they are in the car.

To help Kristie on her road trips without me, I went to Hobby Lobby and picked up the Creative Options Large Rack System for this organizing hack.

Organizing Hack

The Creative Options Large Rack System was a perfect fit because there are multiple slide-out drawers that I could use to organize each type of media. I picked up some foam padding while I was there and cut them to fit the drawers and to hold the various mobile devices in place.

When the kids want to cash in some screen time to play Pokemon on the GameBoy, listen to their own music on an iPhone, or read a book on the Kindle; Kristie just flips the case open and grabs the appropriate rack. She can easily pass it back to the kids in the back and never take her eyes off the road.

All our kids love books, but the older two are having a wonderful time with chapter books. We would never want to do anything to discourage them from indulging in this awesome habit.

The wonderful thing is, once they are done, everything fits precisely back into the drawers. I had a friend who’s kid lost an iPad for 6 months! Turns out is was between cushions in the back seat.

For Kristie it is easy. She calls for the devices back and the kids can easily put everything back where it belongs and pass it back to the front. The clear lids make it easy for Kristie to see that everything is accounted for.

Hack Details

Every rack in this organizing hack is customized for the devices inside. The top has my old GameBoy systems with my favorite games. There is also a sync cable so they can have Pokemon battles with each other. The Kindle rack has chargeing cables for hours of reading fun. The iPhone rack has earphones for Spotify streaming and a battery pack for infinite amounts of PokemonGo. There is also a rack for all the extra stuff we might need.

The headphones are nice to have on hand. It can be hard to get 4 kids to agree and a single audio book or music choice. With the headphones, the older boys can pick the next audio book in their young teen series. At the same time, the younger ones can listen to their special playlists. Sometimes Kristie likes to turn down the volume, just to listen to the our little boy sing along to Hamilton.
